While South Africa is one of only a few African countries with a viable Wild Dog population, rapid urbanisation and human encroachment is making huge inroads into the dog’s natural ranges, placing ever-increasing pressures on their survival. (Their behaviour, breeding patterns and habitats mean that these animals require large areas in which to roam, hunt and form new packs). As a result of these pressures the African Wild Dog is today South Africa’s most endangered large carnivore, with a total population of an estimated 500 individuals. The Endangered Wildlife Trust (EWT) has stated that Wild Dogs are regarded as extinct in 23 countries in Africa.
