Wild Dogs of South Africa

rogerdelaharpewild_dogs_2.jpg

We are thrilled to be working on a new book project and even more thrilled that it's about Africa's Wild Dogs (Lycaon pictus). While South Africa is one of only a few African countries with a viable Wild Dog population, rapid urbanisation and human encroachment is making huge inroads into the dog’s natural ranges, placing ever-increasing pressures on their survival. (Their behaviour, breeding patterns and habitats mean that these animals require large areas in which to roam, hunt and form new packs).

As a result of these pressures the African Wild Dog is today South Africa’s most endangered large carnivore, with a total population of an estimated 500 individuals. The Endangered Wildlife Trust (EWT) has stated that Wild Dogs are regarded as extinct in 23 countries in Africa

News and Updates

As we work through the project we will add regular news and updates to these pages - a sort of blog if you like. Check back often to see our latest stories, pictures and video clips. For weekly updates please visit our Blog.
