AMERICAS

The Americas
Costa Rica
Costa Rica’s Nature Air claims to be the world’s first zero-emission airline. Of course it is cheating a little – explaining that emissions from its aircraft are offset by the carbon-absorbing properties of the trees it is helping to plant. Well, yes. NA is due to launch flights this December to Limon, located on Costa Rica’s Caribbean coast - from the capital, San Jose, and from Bocas del Toro, on Panama’s Caribbean coast.Since its launch in 2000, Nature Air has grown from 18,000 passengers annually to over 100,000 in 2005. It has seven aircraft, and operates 74 flights daily to 17 destinations in Costa Rica, Nicaragua, and Panama.

Peru
Peru Rutas del Peru, tour operator, is promoting ‘fair trade in tourism’ on its new itineraries, which include stays at the Chaparri Ecolodge, located in Peru’s first community reserve in the coastal dry forest. Electrical power and hot water are generated from solar panels and all excursions/activities benefit from the presence of eco-educational guides. As far as possible, all services are sourced from the local community and a percentage of profits are donated for social and conservation projects. Its rates include a tree-planting fee.

Florida
US\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\$2mn UK campaign to boost Florida. Visit Florida, fearing that its UK market is threatened, plans to spend US\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\$1.9mn (£1mn) on an advertising campaign in early 2007 in the hope of re-invigorating this crucial market. Some 1.48mn UK residents, up 7%, visited Florida in 2005. That makes the state the UK’s biggest medium/long-haul destination, but it was below the 2000 peak - when 1.68mn were counted. And anecdotal evidence from the trade suggests that there will have been a decline this year - as much as 10%, says VF.

Mexico
More flights for Mexico. Visitor arrivals in Mexico increased 6% to 22mn in 2005, but early figures for this year showed a decline. The country’s tourism office is hoping that more flights – particularly from its main sources in the rest of North America, Canada and the US – will result in growth.
World Wildlife Fund in Canada has teamed up with Canadian tour operator Horizon - which specialises in luxury travel - to develop a formal travel programme for donors and others interested in travel experiences that would bring them closer to nature and the work of the WWF. The proposed line-up for 2007 includes the Arctic, Newfoundland, and British Columbia in Canada, and internationally to Cuba and Mexico.

New airports in Ecuador
Quito, capital of Ecuador, is due to get a new US\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\$550mn airport in 2009, only 24km from the city. Important in operational terms is that the airport site is 500m lower than the existing airport, and its runway will be 3600m, 500m longer than the existing one. This will reduce the need to impose special weight restrictions on aircraft.

Chile
Chile’s Antarctic Dream is running Patagonian and Antarctic expeditions from Punta Arenas and Ushuaia. Its 78-person ship has been remodelled to provide outdoor cabins, two observation decks (front and back), meeting room, passenger’s open bridge, sauna, gym, library, panoramic view dining room, and health clinic.

Brazil
Amazon Nature Tours, a Brazil based tour operator, has launched Expedition Cruises. This is a 7-day cruise within a new reserve in the centre of the Amazon - created by the Institute for the Environment by combining smaller ones. It is large enough to preserve the biological diversity of this still-undeveloped part of the Amazon.  Customers will explore the rainforest on foot and from the ship’s launches to discover plants and animals, as well as navigating in unmapped territory. Groups of up to 18 will be led by naturalist guides.
